Since working full time again, whilst covering for holiday, I have been forced to find other ways to scratch my creative itch, aside from throwing myself in to detail.
The bear has taken a back seat for a while and I have been sketching again with oils.
This time, a rose...

...It took around an hour and a half to paint and then I left in out in the sun to help it dry off...
It's funny, looking through my blog recently, you'd think that there were several different Artists posting on it - the images are all so different! Still, it's fun to explore different styles sometimes, don't you think?
At the weekend, I will be doing what I do best in my 'usual' style and spending a few hours on the bear :0)
Roll on Saturday! Yay!!
thanks for the Rose, Sandra...
ReplyDeleteand I too see my work looking different all the time.. I'm not consistent. At least thats how I see it , but I'm not going to stress about it... BJ
Well, we could see ourselves as inconsistent - but I prefer 'versatile' ;0)
DeleteI'm glad you like it :0)
Beautiful rose, Sandra! I feel the same way about my work, no consistency. But I am not sure that others think that too. BJ is right, don't stress about it. Happy painting this weekend!
ReplyDeleteThanks Judy! Yes - lets ban the word inconsistent and stick to versatile - I like that, lol! :0)
DeleteHi Sandra. I was just trying to paint a rose today, what a coincidence. Mine was red and I was getting frustrated trying to get the right colour. I think I might need to invest in quinacridone red to really nail it. You've done a nice job and I can start to see more painterly elements coming through which is great. :D
ReplyDeleteThanks James. Hope you'll be posting yours :0)
DeleteNot this time, It has been consigned to the trash but I have learnt what to do next time so until then :D
Deletep.s I keep trying with this avatar but I never know if it's going to work :S
I've reached a compromise and linked to Google where you can then link to me.... sigh.
DeleteBtw, I just saw your teddy bear prints! you've gone PRO! nice one, I hope you're selling lots, they look great and very professional.
I think playing with different styles sort of stretches your bran.... I am loving seeing these quick sketches.... and the tonal work and structure in this is fantabulous!!!!!!! Roses are tough and you have made it look effortless... very cool...xx
ReplyDeleteThank you Tracey - Tough, and also my least favorite flower so I'm not sure why I chose it. I think I was inspired by all the others I have seen in blog land recently! :0)
DeleteVariety is good! There's a lot to be said about an artist that paints lots of different things. This rose is beautiful, Sandra! Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Heather! I think it's fun to step out of my comfort zone from time to time too :0)
DeleteI love it Sandra!! So pretty, and I really love seeing your brushstrokes. :) I would love to see more and more of these oil sketches they are so gorgeous. And expressive too.
ReplyDeleteAnd I don't think your blog looks anything but yours, but I must admit I have been feeling the same way about mine lately!
Thanks so much Crystal. I think you will see more of these - and probably, eventually more watercolours too. It's such fun to play! :0)
DeleteAs for your blog - every painting I would recognise as one of yours whether signed or not - so you have nothing to worry about! :0)
Sandra, enjoy your bearish moments this weekend.:)
ReplyDeleteThanks kathryn. Will do. Can't wait! :0)
DeleteLove the bold brushstrokes in this ... quite a change from the finer work of your bears. Inconsistent?. Nope, I agree with the others, versatile :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Michael! It is very much a change isn't it :0)
DeleteSandra,
ReplyDeleteI think oils and you go really well together. This little sketch is lovely. There are distinct brush marks everywhere and that shows your confidence with the medium.
Thank you Prabal.
DeleteYes, I also like the brush marks. It wouldn't suit the bear paintings but I love it for other subjects :0)
Lovely Sandra. And yes, I agree, mixing it us a bit and trying different media certainly helps your artistic growth. Happy Creating.
ReplyDeleteThank you Nora :0)
DeleteI saw the rose on my sidebar and had to do a double-take .... Sandra?
ReplyDeleteReally nice work though - a change is as good as a rest.
Have a good weekend
Thank you John.
DeleteMy Sister said the same, that she didn't think it was me at first, lol! What can I say? I'm a Gemini and so I'm inconsistent by nature ;0)
I love this Rose. Quick and easy and oozing with confident relaxed brushwork. Inspirational as always. Enjoy your weekend.
ReplyDeleteThank you John! I'm glad you like it too :0)
DeleteHi Sandra. Tu esfuerzo valió la pena. Preciosa rosa.
ReplyDeleteUn abrazo desde Barcelona
Muchas gracias Blanco. Me alegro de que pienses asÃ: 0)
DeleteWOW! good one!
ReplyDeleteThanks Ashok :0)
DeleteThe variety in your work shows the breadth of your creativity - its a lovely rose, Sandra.
ReplyDeleteI like that - that's a good way of looking at it, lol! Thank you Susan ;0)
DeleteHI Sandra, it is a beautiful rose. lovely!!and so different!! I like to try different things. Your bears are so wonderful. take care, love,Diana
ReplyDeleteThanks so Much Diana! Yes, my bears are what i consider to be my usual style, much like the other things on my side bar. but still, I love trying new things. It's a lot of fun :0)
DeleteLovely colors and light in this one, Sandra!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Laura! So lovely to see you :0)
DeleteThis is lovely and lucky you having sun to leave it outside to dry in!! I know exactly what you mean about the different styles - mine is very much like that too. The week I did the featured artist on Paint Party Friday I was conscious of how different all my work looks when shown together unlike other artists who seem to have a very distinct style. I sometimes feel like I need a style all my own but then I like to try different things too. Your work is all amazing though whichever medium you use!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Nicola!
DeleteBut you do have a style of your own. Maybe it's just that you don't see it?
I am pretty sure that if I saw a piece of your art in a room full of other art I would recognize it and that's really what I think is important. but like me, you like to try other things too.
I'm a Gemini and I bore easily, so breaking away from time to time for me is a good thing :0)
What a gorgeous rose! Love the two strong, constrasting colours and the bold brush strokes, and how you managed to retain the rose's delicacy. It just makes me want to go and stroll around in some lovely English garden, followed by tea and cake :). How good that you still manage to find time to create, I'm really struggling with that at the moment. The style thing is also something I'm constantly struggling with. I think variety is a good thing, and you have different styles which are consistent in themselves, which is just terrific. I'm still trying to find some sort of own style (but I'm a double air sign (Gemini ascendant), which makes it even more difficult to focus ;) ).
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! I am also struggling for time too at the moment. I've been working full time for the last couple of weeks and this weekend has been taken up entirely - so I am in the same boat at the moment - so frustrating!
DeleteI'm also a Gemini! I think we bore easily by nature so we are often compelled to try new things. I think you already have a style but you just don't see it yourself :0)
Love your color sense and I also love seeing an artist push themself so the different approaches appeal to me.
ReplyDeleteCame over from Nora's blog to tell you I also have seen the artist picture you mentioned, Hilarious!
Thanks so much for dropping in Julie! It was a funny one wasn't it - One of those I wish I had thought of first! :0)
DeleteWanderful rose, Sandra! You are really a versatile artist, don't worry about the different style of your works, they are all beautiful. Hug!
ReplyDeleteYou are kind Tito - Thank you so much! :0)
DeleteHola de nuevo Sandra. Gracias por tu visita y por tu comentario. Es todo un halago aunque innecesario.
ReplyDeleteUn abrazo desde Barcelona.
Mucho Gracias Blanco :0)
DeleteThis rose is absolutely beautiful, Sandra!!...being born in June, this was always my favorite flower...You truly painted it perfectly!!! NOT an easy subject!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Hilda. They aren't easy, you are right there! :0)
