Seaside villains...

Of all the birds I have ever come across, these guys are one of my favorites.
They're not rare, nor are they blessed with splendid beauty - but I have never yet met any other bird with such unconcealed boldness, personality and character!

They are such crafty and cunning little crooks - I have seen them steal everything from a cherry in a cocktail glass, to a whole ice-cream from a child's hand!

Last year, one of these rascals even stole a sausage whilst it was still cooking on our barbecue - That was surprise enough, but I was actually turning the sausages at the time! You have to admire such barefaced, unashamed bravery don't you?

Apart from that, they remind me of my first love - the sea!

Have a great weekend!

  2. I think you've captured the seagulls' characters perfectly. The one on the left appears to be saying "Yeah, whaddayawant?", and the other is looking around for someone to intimidate and bully. Well done!

  3. Sandra, your seagull drawings are so very pleasing. You do so much with economy of line work. I love the sea and seagulls too. That is one bird who knows how to survive and luckily they are not a threatened species.

  10. Love your seagulls! Your right in your observation about how nasty they really are, but I still love them in paintings! I even have a wooden seagull sculpture on my mantel. Nice job! YOu are an inspiration to me!

  13. Yes, indeed you have to admire that! And your paintings of them capture that perfectly! Sneaky little birds. I've always thought them pretty brave since I read Watership Down.

And your painting of the sea looks perfect. I love the waves. :)

  14. Nice common gull sketches Sandra; I like the first one where they seem to have attitude - the kind of attitude you speak of in your blog!

The slight alteration to your seascape has made a world of difference. It just goes to show that we should be constantly on our guard not to forget the simple rules in our eagerness to paint - something we all do at times.
